May is the best month. There’s no denying it. Spring buds in the northern hemisphere, autumn leaves in the south - whatever it is, I’ll take it. I don’t care. It feels good to be amidst the motion and change after an endless stretch of heat or cold.
So, not that you need it. But here are some little things to make your life feel better this month.
See - The Bear
I generally avoid stressful television. My idea of good TV at the end of a long day are familiar favourites (read: Friends, yet again) and frivolous storylines where a spunky doctor named Mindy Lahiri finds love in New York City. This may explain why, then, I resisted falling into The Bear trap (lol) for so long. But I have come to the conclusion, rather late, that millions of people already knew: The Bear is really, really, really good.
Here is why, in a few words: the storytelling takes risks, and I think viewers are happy to be surprised and challenged after years of predictable plots and generic archetypes. The editing, the writing, the structure are all incongruent to the expected TV formulas and I think it is wildly clever to take such joyful risks in a small screen format. Plus, Jeremy Allen White is hot!!!
I finish each episode on absolute edge and wired to the n’th degree, but no matter. It’s too good to care.
PS. An update from last month’s ‘see’ suggestion: Jethro hated Dune: Part II. We are still, somehow, friends.
Visit - Towpath Cafe!!!!
Towpath Cafe is back. Gorgeous, glorious news. For those who don’t live in London, this is an unfair suggestion as I hate to dangle a carrot that can never be enjoyed, but those who are, what a joyful thing. I love nothing more than to perch at this canal-side cafe on a Saturday morning and eat crispy, sage fried eggs in the sunshine. And if you can nab a candlelit dinner table in the evening, it is a memory to treasure. God save the two women behind this little spot.
If you’re not in London, perhaps you can get your hands on their cookbook and recreate the magic wherever in the world you are.
Read - Her Body & Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado
My dear friend Anna has been raving about this short story collection for I don’t know how long, and now that I have finally got around to reading it I can see why. Dark, sticky, enchanting stories that stay with you. I want to finish it quickly so that I may start it all over again.
Poetry - Today I love Being Alive by Alex Dimitrov
I wake up and eat a banana.
Stand naked in my kitchen.
Shave and listen to Billie Holiday. My god, I’m so obsessed with you.
You’re new. You’re tall. You make me feel
like never putting clothes on.
Who’s to say if you’ll still be around
when anyone’s reading this poem.
Or if the Earth will continue
Eat - Alison Roman’s lasagne
No explanation needed. The photos do it justice.
Inspire - dreamy photographers.
As a chronically online person, I sometimes worry about the amount of content i consumer on a daily basis. But then I think, if I gave it all up, I wouldn’t know any of the work of the likes of the below. And that, dear friends, would be very sad.
